Howarth's Beds History page

The History of Howarths Beds.

Since 1955 the Howarth family name has been associated with furniture thorough the North West. Our father Cyril, who traded as Howarth's Furniture Warehouse, started the foundations of the business in Farnworth Lancashire. "Things were different then" recalls Cyril, "you just pilled it up and it sold it's self, although to keep it all together took wit, grit, craft and graft.

After compulsory purchase in 1976 by the local authority, Cyril closed his doors said fair well to Farnworth and moved to Blackpool. It was just a short time later that he opened again, along with his wife Joyce and three children Lynne, Brian and Steven, who formed a partnership as Howarth's Furniture Warehouse in George St Blackpool.

Trading was harsh through the remaining Seventies and early Eighties and both Lynne and Steven left to peruse other careers. The business then gradually changed to selling mainly beds and in 1998 Joyce and Cyril retired and sold out to their eldest son Brian, who now trades along with his son Jonathan, as Howarth's Beds LTD.

In 2005 Brian ventured out in to a bold new world. After 30 years at George St. the area was due for redevelopment and regeneration, so Howarths beds had to move. The right choice was Talbot Road, Layton, one of the prime route's in to town, next door to Talbot Showrooms and just opposit the KFC and Queens public house.
